Have a Nutritious Breakfast: Start your day right by choosing a nutritious breakfast, known as the most important meal. Fitness for Children

Image
Fitness for Children Physical activity is an important part of your child’s life; it has a tremendous impact on physical, intellectual and emotional development. As adults, we have a responsibility to be role models for our children, sharing with them the pleasures and benefits of a physically active lifestyle. Developing a love of sports and a habit of regular physical activity as a child can be the foundation for a long, healthy life. With child obesity reaching epidemic levels there has been no more important time than now to focus on child and adolescent fitness. These problems are exacerbated by the more sedentary lifestyles we live with children being content to sit in front of computers all day, instead of joining sports teams, and other physically demanding activities. Good nutrition also is important for your child. As with physical activity, you are a role model. When you choose and prepare healthful foods, your child also will be more likely to follow your example...

FITNESS TIPS

THE ROLE BODY FAT PLAYS IN DETERMINING ONE'S RISK OF CHRONIC DISEASES As the prevalence of obesity in America approaches epidemic proportions, researchers are scrambling to learn more about how the body stores fat, how fat tissues affect body systems and the role body fat plays in determining one's risk of chronic diseases. What researchers have learned is that fat is much more than an extra layer of insulation. It actually works as an endocrine organ that secretes dozens of proteins that affect the inner workings of the body. One such protein is leptin. Discovered in 1994, leptin is released by fat cells. One of its functions is to send signals to the brain to boost or curb appetite. As a person gains weight, their fat cells release more leptin, which in theory should cause a decrease in appetite and an increase in the number of calories burned. However, researchers have found that obese people often are not sensitive to leptin; thus, it has little effect ...

McDonald's introduces trans-fat-free oil

Image
Good giant McDonald's has finally begun to use trans-fat-free oil for cooking french fries in some restaurants, after seven years of testing different oil varieties. According to spokesperson Walt Riker, the new oil has been introduced into more than 1,200 restaurants in the United States. He did not reveal the locations of these restaurants, or when the chain would begin using the new oil in its other 12,500 U.S. locations . Trans fats are artificially created fats that have no nutritional value. They have been shown to raise the body's ratio of "bad" (LDL) to "good" (HDL) cholesterol, thus increasing the risk of heart disease. McDonald's spent seven years testing more than 50 blends of 18 different varieties of oil before settling on the current oil. The restaurant first pledged to introduce a new oil in 2002, but backed away from that promise within a few months, reportedly due to concerns about a new oil's possible taste effects. Accor...

A Prayer For Wings Of Ire

Image
A Prayer For Wings Of Ire WE LIVE in an age of angels. Celestial beings appear in the titles of beauty parlours and pubs, hairdressers and IT companies, limousine services and clothing manufacturers. They are embodied in wingless infants with fashionable names such as Raphael and Gabriel or in adults called Angelo, Angela or plain old Michael, "the militant archangel". (The trend has not yet embraced "the proud rebellious archangel" Lucifer, but you never know.) Angels hover over Christmas pageants, hens' nights, Mardi Gras and any other event where participants strap on a pair of wings and flutter about waiting to fall. They can open a dinner party - angel-on-horseback is a retro dish of oysters wrapped in bacon, grilled and served on toast- and close it in the form of angel-food cake. Angels sparkle on trashy T-shirts (along with princesses and devils), they crash through ceilings in television events such as Angels in America and chat with winemak...

Makeup That Won't Wash Off

Image
Makeup That Won't Wash Off WOLLONGONG beauty therapist Elizabeth De Martin learnt the art of cosmetic tattooing as a young girl in North Africa. Her family, which had been holidaying in Libya at the outbreak of World War II, decided to make the great continent their home after war plundered their land in Italy. Ms De Martin's budding creative talents were utilised by the African women in preparation for their weddings. ``Brides were tattooed as part of the bridal ceremony," she said. ``We used to cut into the skin and apply ink with a stick. There was no anaesthetic and it was very painful." Today's methods, she said, are a far cry from those days and clients now undergo a safe and quick operation under local anaesthetic or with the help of anaesthetising creams. Ms De Martin's Kembla St salon is one of just a handful of Illawarra beauty parlours that offer cosmetic tattooing - a practice that attracts all ages. ``Permanent eyebro...

Lip Tips

Image
Lip Tips Just like your eyes, your lips are the most striking feature of your face. surely we do not have to tell you what a dash of color on your lips can do for you. When choosing your lipstick, coordinate it with the most dramatic color on your clothes. And of course your eye make-up and nail enamel. A lip definer or lip pencil/ lip liner helps to give proper and defined outline to the lips. It stops the lipstick from spreading outside the lip line. with the help of a lip liner, you can get any desired lip shape. Define your lip outline first with the lip liner and then fill in the matching lip shade. How to Apply Lipstick:  The color of your lips changes the shade of the lipstick. To get the original rich color, blend liquid make-up on your lips before you apply lipstick. This helps in altering your lip line and makes your lipstick last longer. To obtain a well-defined lip line, use the pointed tip of your lipstick and outline your lip shape. Now take the flat sur...

Health Care

Image
Sure, you may think organic foods are better for you. But, have you ever seen any proof that the higher-priced organic foods you purchase are actually any more healthy than their conventional counterparts? Have you ever questioned if they are more healthy? You’re not alone. Even agencies that offer health-related advice on the foods we eat have been questioning if organic foods are more nutritious, often citing the lack of scientific evidence. These questions may finally be answered. Recent research provides scientific evidence that organic foods are indeed healthier and it may change opinions about these foods. In recent (largest of its kind) study at Newcastle University UK, researchers have found that eating organic foods vs. conventional foods may provide many benefits which convention foods do not. In addition to increasing lifespan, these foods contain higher levels of antioxidants and flavonoids which are many times absent in chemically treated foods and produce. The...
